Putting drives safety directly into motion

Machine and drives safety are top concerns and one of the fastest growing segments of industrial automation. Siemens has been leading the way with Integrated Safety technology, improving plant safety while significantly increasing productivity. Moving the classic safety functions into the machine control system and drives not only allows for faster action but eliminates the costly and troublesome electromechanical devices prone to failure and difficult to troubleshoot. Safety Standards

Safety Functions

These safety functions are available in all modes. They can be realized for each individual axis and spindle.

Safe Torque Off (STO)

Disables firing pulses in the drive and prevents the drive from restarting unexpectedly

Safe Stop 1 (SS1)

Brakes the drive along a quick stop ramp (OFF3) and automatically activates the STO and SBC functions when the safety timer runs down

Safe Operating Stop (SOS)

In operation with SS2 standstill monitoring ensures the actual position is reliably monitored

Safe Stop 2 (SS2)

In contrast to SS1 the drive control remains operational so the motor can supply full torque to maintain zero speed

Safe Brake Control (SBC)

Used to control holding brake

Safely Limited Speed (SLS)

Maintains that a set speed limit is not breached

Safe Speed Monitor (SSM)

Supplies a safe checkback signal when the drive is under a specified limit

Safe Direction (SDI)

The SDI function ensures that the drive can only rotate in the selected direction

Safe Brake Test (SBT)

Performs a test of the brake function at cyclical intervals.

Safely-Limited Position (SLP)

monitors the axis to ensure that it remains within the permissible traversing range.

Safely Position (SP)

Transfers the safely determined actual position values in the drive to a safety controller via PROFIsafe communication.
