Packaging is acquiring increasing importance in terms of product recognition. As a result, the requirements for the production of board are becoming stringent as well. Multiple layer, smooth board covered with several coating layers meets the requirements for the intended purpose.Different qualities of raw materials are used in the various layers of the board. Our SIPAPER product family provides everything required for board production, from raw materials to finished products, from high-voltage power supply to field instrumentation and from lighting and fire protection systems to communication equipment. For efficient production, the SIPAPER solutions have been and are being designed so that the necessary information can be freely exchanged. In other words, they are a kind of predefined "plug and play" solution. It is not important whether the solutions are completely installed immediately or whether they are gradually combined to form an overall system landscape; they "understand" each other without any additional engineering.
Stock Preparation: Ready for Production
The pulps that are manufactured during pulping, need to be further treated in order to improve its physical properties. This pulp then undergoes mechanical treatment commonly known as refining. This unit operation is carried out in the stock preparation area of the paper machine. Fillers and auxiliary agents are added to the refined pulps and these pulp mixtures are temporarily stored in tanks. Thereafter the pulps undergo a series of cleaning, dilution and screening phases.Solutions with SIPAPER has developed advanced drive and process automation solutions for all the steps involved in the process. The Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is responsible for acquiring the production data and makes it available for further processing and material tracking; a high level of system availability is ensured by a range of services.
The paper manufacturing process involves, sheet forming, wet pressing, drying, coating, surface sizing drying, calendaring and winding. Depending on the type of board machine, the paper machine geometry is accordingly designed. In modern board machines all of these unit operations are accomplished on a single line.
Precision variable-speed and torque-controlled drives, which are usually combined to form a network of sectional drives, provide the machines with the power they need; a large number of single drives are also required around the machine for pumps and fans. The machine-specific controller together with the process automation system PCS7 ensure that the machine parts and auxiliary functions interact properly. The production process and auxiliary processes are optimized by means of the automation solution SIPAPER DCS, and the efficiency of production control is boosted with MES solutions. Services and technical support ensure that the machine is always available.
As a generic term for the processes that follow the manufacturing process, finishing covers various machine types and functions:
Calendar for smoothing
Winders for rewinding and cutting the roles
Sheet Cutter for cutting sheets from the roles
Packing machines for roles and sheets
Variable-speed drives whose interaction is coordinated by our SIPAPER Drives solutions ensure that the machines run efficiently and accurately. Order and material tracking as well as logistics processes are handled using MES solutions. The process is optimized by means of the SIPAPER DCS solution package. Last but not least, these state-of-the-art standardized solutions are complemented by our services and technical support in order to provide a high level of availability.
Alongside Corporate Management, Administration is usually home to all the activities and functions that are not linked directly to the production process. This is where information is aggregated, decisions are made, contracts concluded, data stored, as well as raw materials and production planned.
To be able to function efficiently, Corporate Management, Human Resources, Purchasing, Production Planning and the Project department require not only the right information at the right time and the right place, but also a suitable IT infrastructure in order to fulfill the demands made of them.
Siemens offers consulting and software solutions together with the appropriate hardware for all aspects of Administration. These include solutions for vertical and horizontal integration from production level to corporate level. The range of products and services is complemented by a large number of stationary and mobile telephone systems, communications networks, data servers, PCs and laptops to equip the IT infrastructure and ensure that it remains operational.
Production involves a wide range of different processes: Incoming materials, auxiliary agents and additives that have been delivered must be stored in the appropriate quantities at various locations. Semi-finished products, such as parent rolls, are stored temporarily before being processed further. Outgoing finished products must be picked for orders placed and then shipped. The types of warehouse and modes of transportation used are equally diverse: for example, woodyards, waster paper and high-bay warehouses, roll stockrooms, warehouses for bulk and ground storage, rack serving units, cranes, fork-lift trucks, etc.
In the pulp and paper industry, water is a vital production resource as well as a significant cost factor. As a process ingredient, it significantly affects the quality of intermediate as well as end products. Quality parameters such as printability, runability or cross section variances are directly related to wet-end chemistry and the water resource. What’s more, increasing water and energy costs and stricter environmental regulations make intelligent solutions in water management even more important – solutions that optimize the entire water cycle in your plant.
Increased production, reduced water usage, consistent qualitySIPAPER Water is a water management concept that bundles our expertise in the field of water supply and water treatment. For your facility, that means increased production volumes, reduced water consumption, and above all ensured consistent product quality.
Water management is Energy ManagementWe combine recycling of rejects and biogas production with power generation to create a highly sophisticated energy concept. With this concept and our expert implementation, Siemens delivers real long-term economic advantages for your operation.
Energy - Economics Meets Ecology
Electric power, steam and water are becoming ever more important factors in the pulp and paper industry. A high level of availability is expected, and this is what we guarantee with our SIPAPER Power and SIPAPER Water solutions. This applies both to new plants and to the expansion or modernization of existing plants. The advantage of these solutions is the consistency of the engineering throughout the mill, thereby achieving a uniform plant concept for generation, distribution and consumption.
SIPAPER Power includes the power management systems for energy import, generation and distribution, aimed at optimizing consumption and hence also costs.
In the light of rising energy prices and obligations to limit emissions, reducing specific energy use is one of the priorities of every pulp and paper mill. To deal with this concern, Siemens provides support throughout the entire manufacturing process.
