SIMOTION motion controllers offer complete machine control in a single controller and is just as effective in a multi-axis machine as it is in just one (model D410) or two axes. Encompassing three hardware platforms, customizable runtime software packages and a single engineering environment (SCOUT), SIMOTION handles all necessary tasks for machine automation.

SIMOTION supports motion control as well as logic control to realize the entire machine application within a single platform. By merging motion control, logic, and additional technological functions (force, pressure, temperature, interpolation, robotics), SIMOTION eliminates the typical separation between pure control tasks (typically logic functions), motion functions, and technology functions.
Featuring a single engineering environment, SIMOTION uses the intuitive, object-oriented engineering software SCOUT for all tasks, including configuration, programming and commissioning. SCOUT supports several programming languages, including LADDER, MCC, and structured texts. As a result, SCOUT is the only software tool needed for the entire lifecycle of the machine. It is IEC61131-3 compliant.
Siemens has developed SIMOTIION standard applications for many industry-specific solutions. These pre-engineered projects save considerable development time.
Three different hardware configurations support varying user requirements - each SIMOTION platform supports the following:
Motion Control: speed, position control, and synch operation (gear, cam) for electric, stepper, and hydraulic axes
High-speed inputs for probe and PLS functionality
Force control, pressure control, temperature control
All of the logic functionality of a PLC
Communication: PROFIBUS, PROFINET and Ethernet for Engineering, HMI, and coupling to other devices or networks
Motion safety configuration
3D interpolation with kinematic transformations for robotic control
Integration flexibility for modular machines
SIMOTION has the capability to add libraries and incrementally increase their functionality. The open communication, common database structure, and consistent programming environment offered by SIMOTION allow it to be compliant with TIA principles. This means that SIMOTION and SIMATIC PLCs, Distributed I/O and HMIs can be programmed and configured from within the same project.
