Siemens Answers with a List of Enclosed Drives Available with Seismic Certification

What is Seismic Certification?

Earthquakes can be devastating events, and it is vital that critical infrastructure such as water treatment or power generating facilities survive the event with as little damage as possible. This issue is addressed by building codes that define the requirements to withstand seismic events (amongst many other such as wind, ice or snow load). Seismic requirements apply not only to the buildings or structures of a facility, but also to non-structural equipment contained therein.

How is Seismic Certification Achieved?

Seismic certification involves extensive structural analyses of the design of the enclosed drive, and confirmation by shake table testing. Certification testing of the Siemens drives range was performed at the University of California, Berkeley, Earthquake Simulator Laboratory. After testing, the drives were powered up and confirmed to be fully operational.

IBC Certification

All states in the continental US have adopted the International Building Code (IBC), although there may be variations in requirements due to the version of the IBC, as well as additional local requirements, such as the California Building Code.

Per the IBC, facilities are assigned a Risk Category based on potential hazard to human life as well as the potential of damage to infrastructure having significant economic impact or cause disruption of civilian life. Seismic requirements apply not only to the facility structures but also to non-structural equipment such as variable frequency drives. When installed in a facility with Risk Category III or IV they are automatically assigned an Importance Factor of 1.5, indicating that the equipment must not only survive an earthquake without collapsing or toppling over, but be functional afterwards.

OSHPD Approval

The State of California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) is a state agency that also monitors the construction, renovation, and seismic safety of hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. The OSHPD Special Seismic Certification Preapproval (OSP) is a voluntary program for review and preapproval of Special Seismic Certifications for equipment to be used in health facilities construction in California. Although focused on health facilities, other agencies look to this level, which is the most stringent in the US, to specify products meeting this "gold standard."

Seismic Certification for Special Requirements

Special requirements with respect to seismic certification may apply, for example, in the nuclear power industry where it is necessary that drives not only survive an earthquake and be operational afterwards, but continue to operate during the seismic event.
