Safe in the field with the isolating transformer
The fieldbus isolating transformer RS-485-IS makes the PROFIBUS DP intrinsically safe. It can be used wherever communications exceed potentially explosive areas, i.e. above zone 1 or zone 21.
The RS 485-IS coupler is used for connecting ET 200iS, ET 200iSP and other devices (e.g. OPs) in hazardous areas over PROFIBUS RS 485-IS and as a repeater for amplifying the data signals on bus lines. This is required when the maximum number of nodes or the maximum cable length per segment in the hazardous area is exceeded and a PROFIBUS RS 485-IS segment is connected to a PROFIBUS DP Ex i segment.

So that all the advantages of a failsafe bus installation are also available with PROFIBUS DP, an isolating transformer is used to make PROFIBUS DP intrinsically safe. This is done by isolating the bus and limiting the energy in the safe area. The fieldbus isolating transformer is used here as a barrier that converts PROFIBUS DP to an intrinsically safe PROFIBUS DP. It allows the PROFIBUS connector to be disconnected and connected even under Ex conditions.The RS 485-IS is approved for use in hazardous areas of Zone 2; for this it must be mounted in a casing with a degree of protection of at least IP54. A manufacturer compliance notice for Zone 2 must be available (according to EN 50021) for the casing and the required cable glands. The device can be mounted horizontally or vertically on a S7-300 standard rail.
The power rail booster supports connection of a PROFIBUS DP through a contact wire, such as can be implemented on monorail conveyors or high-bay storage and retrieval systems, thus ensuring continued use of the wide range of PROFIBUS DP system services, such as diagnostics and PROFIsafe safety engineering through a bus.
By transferring the PROFIBUS DP signal via collector wires using signal boosting, new, low-cost concepts based on standard components can be implemented for electric monorail systems or stacker crane systems.

For safe data transmission of the PROFIBUS DP signals via the contact conductors, the signal levels are raised to an interference-immune level and injected into the contact conductors. With permissible and self-optimizing baud rates from 9600 bit/s to 500 kbit/s, a maximum busbar length from 25 m at 500 kbit/s to 1200 m at 9600 bit/s can be realized. Up to 125 nodes per segment are possible, uninterruptible communication beyond segment limits is achieved by using the "PRB segment controller" . The SIMATIC ET 200 I/O systems offer powerful, multi-level diagnostic systems within the framework of Totally Integrated Automation for faults that occur in the control system (system diagnostics). System faults are automatically detected and are caught by programmable exception handling routines. Furthermore, such system faults are signaled to the connected HMI system, and displayed there in an appropriate manner.In addition to system-wide diagnostics, Profibus offers so-called bus diagnostics which is supported by diagnostic devices.
The diagnostics repeater for PROFIBUS DP connects PROFIBUS DP segments with RS 485 technology. It also physically monitors the copper bus lines in online mode. If an error occurs, it sends a diagnostic message to the DP master with detailed information on the type and location of the error. The diagnostics repeater is a standard slave. It can be operated on any DP master that supports the standard RD_REC and WR_REC services. To record the topology, you will need either STEP 7 or COM PROFIBUS.
