IO-Link - Software

With the Port Configuration Tool (“PCT”), STEP 7 Engineering has powerful software for assigning parameters for Siemens IO-Link master modules and IO-Link devices. S7 PCT is integrated in STEP 7 as of V5.4 SP5 and is called via the hardware configuration of the IO-Link master. Apart from this program form integrated in STEP 7 Engineering, a standalone version of S7 PCT is also available and can be installed separately.

All IO-Link products available to Siemens are already available in the hardware selection catalog of the Engineering. Certified devices from third-party suppliers can be easily and quickly integrated into the Engineering by means of their IODD device description file.

With the Port Configuration Tool, parameter data of the IO-Link devices can be set, changed, copied and saved in the STEP 7 project: In this way, all configuration data and parameters right down to the device level are stored consistently.

The S7 PCT standalone variant allows simple use of the IO-Link with the distributed SIMATIC I/O ET 200 in control systems of other providers (without STEP 7).

Library with Siemens device-specific function blocks

Systematic diagnostics concepts and the efficient handling of parameter data are demanded at all levels of automation engineering. It is essential here that sensors and switching devices are integrated into the automation network.
To read data (such as parameters, diagnostic data and measured values) out of individual devices or to even assign parameters to them, the individual structure of the data storage in the devices must be observed. Working with devices can quickly become unclear and associated with high costs. The library provided here offers a helping hand.

The library provides function blocks and UDTs for all IO-Link devices from the Siemens portfolio, which standardize and facilitate communication with IO-Link devices. For each read/write order, only the data record specified on the input is read/written. Only the basic data such as address, port number and order must be specified. This is possible as the function blocks bring together all functionalities offered by an IO-Link-capable SIEMENS device in one block, which would have previously required time-consuming, individual programming.

IOL_DEVICE function block

The IOL_DEVICE function block increases the ease of programming and parameter assignment in IO-Link Engineering with the following functions:

  • (Re-)parameterization of an IO-Link device during operation

  • Read-out of additional information from the IO-Link device
    (e.g. diagnostics, maintenance, device data, etc.)

  • Executing IO-Link port functions

  • Backing up/restoring IO-Link device parameters when replacing devices

The IOL_DEVICE function block can be used to read any data objects from IO-Link devices, save these failsafe objects and to write them back to the IO-Link device following replacement of an IO-Link device by means of the IOL_CALL.

Calling the IOL_DEVICE function block and permanently saving it is to be controlled by the user program.

IOL_MASTER function block

The IOL_MASTER function block conveniently offers the option to back up and restore data of the IO-Link master should you need to replace it.

The function block provides the following functions:

  • Downloading and saving data of the IO-Link master to the controller

  • Backing up saved data to the IO-Link master

Calling the IOL_MASTER function block and permanently saving it is to be controlled by the user program.

Details

  • For IO-Link masters and devices according to IO-Link V1.1, the master data comprise the configuration of the master and the parameters of the devices.

  • For IO-Link masters and devices according to IO-Link V1.0, the device parameters are not included in the master data. The backup of device parameters is to be performed in this case using function block IOL_CALL IOL_DEVICE.
