SIRIUS 3RK3 Modular Safety System
Flexibility and functionality in a new dimension
Whether you are looking for a simple solution or a complex safety application:
With our SIRIUS 3RK3 Modular Safety System (MSS), you can rely on a universal modular system that enables you to adapt machines and plants in the most flexible and economic way – both for new designs and for retrofits. Because safety functions can be parameterized quickly and easily using the MSS ES software.
Thanks to the consistent modularity, you are also extremely flexible within your applications and save costs since you do not have to utilize more modules than necessary. The SIRIUS 3RK3 Modular Safety System can be applied for safety applications up to SIL 3 according to IEC 62061 and PL e according to ISO 13849-1 respectively.
The SIRIUS 3RK3 modular safety system's new central unit makes it easy to supplement expansion modules. An AS-i interface has also been integrated into the new central unit, significantly simplifying cabling. In addition, the DP interface module allows the MSS system to connect to higher-level plant controllers via PROFIBUS.
Modular system for customized solutions
The Basic, Advanced and ASIsafe versions of the central modules represent the core of our SIRIUS 3RK3 modular safety system, whose number of inputs and outputs can be flexibly adjusted via expansion modules or AS-Interface. This allows for the quantity structure's flexible adjustment to the respective application. In addition, an interface module facilitates the transmission of diagnostics and state data to a superior PROFIBUS network. The MSS ES parameterization software forms a central system component and supports the rapid and easy parameterization of safety functions as well as comprehensive diagnostics options.
The central module is the basic component in each SIRIUS 3RK3 Modular Safety System. It reads in inputs, controls outputs and can communicate with higher-level controllers via a bus module. The entire safety program of an application is processed in the central module. It can function at the lowest configuration level and can be parameterized using the MSS ES software.
Basic central module:
In situations where more than three safety functions must be evaluated and where parameterizing the wiring of safety relays would be very time-consuming and expensive to implement, the 3RK3 Basic central module is used. It reads in inputs, controls outputs and communicates with higher-level controllers via an interface module.
The entire safety program of an application is processed in the central module. At the smallest configuration level, the 3RK3 Basic central module is functional on its own without any of the expansion modules that can be connected as options.

Advanced central module:
The 3RK3 Advanced central module is the logical expansion of the Basic central module – to include the AS-i safety monitor. It enables a standard AS-i network to be upgraded for safety-related tasks. Typical applications: Slave-to-slave communication in modular machine concepts or safety-related communication with plant components. In addition to the features of the Basic version, the 3RK3 Advanced central module offers numerous additional features.
4/8 safety-related inputs
Up to 9 expansion modules can be connected
Up to 12 safe independent distributed disconnection groups via ASIsafe
With expansion modules, the scope of functions of the MSS can be flexibly adapted to the requirements of the application. Expansion modules are offered as safety-related and standard input and output modules as well as mixed modules. Any combination of module types is possible. Parameters are assigned via the central modules with the MSS ES software.
This following expansion modules are available:
4/8 F-DI: - 8 safety-related sensor inputs
2/4F-DI 1/2F-RO:- 4 safety-related sensor inputs- 2 safety-related relay outputs
2/4F-DI 2F-DO:- 4 safety-related sensor inputs- 2 safety-related solid-state outputs
4/8 F-RO:- 8 safety-related relay outputs
4 F-DO:- 4 safety-related solid-state outputs
8 DO: - 8 solid-state standard outputs
8 DI: - 8 standard inputs
The DP interface module is used to transfer diagnostics data and device status data to a higher-level PROFIBUS network. Depending on the central unit, it is thus possible to exchange up to 64 bits of data with the controller in cyclic mode. The diagnostics data can be called up in acyclic mode.
The diagnostics display is used to display diagnostics data and device status data so that when an error occurs or a safety sensor is tripped, the cause for the plant outage can be identified as fast as possible.
One system – four device series
Four central modules with varying functionality are available for the 3RK3 modular safety system:
MSS Basic – the powerful entry-level version of the SIRIUS 3RK3 modular safety system
MSS Advanced – the consistent expansion of the Basic central module with even more functions, increased quantity structures and communication via AS-i / ASIsafe
MSS ASIsafe – in the Basic and Extended versions as successor of our AS-i safety monitors below MSS Advanced

SIRIUS 3RK3 Modular Safety System (MSS) Overview
The SIRIUS 3RK3 modular safety system now allows simple connection to AS-i networks. This means that a multitude of functions, such as protective door monitoring, muting and direct data exchange, are easier and quicker to implement.
The SIRIUS 3RK3 modular safety relay makes effective protective door monitoring simple. Preconfigured modules can be used to parameterize protective door monitoring depending on the operating mode - for normal, service or fault case. This makes protective door monitoring really easy and increases plant productivity.
If materials have to be transported to or from a danger area for further processing, the openings of the access routes may be large enough that aperson can also reach into or go inside the danger area. The requirement is,on the one hand, to protect persons from injury when they enter into the danger area and,on the other hand, to allow materials to pass automatically without obstruction. For this purpose, aspecial safety circuit is used that monitors the opening to the danger area withnon-contact electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) and deactivates or "overrides" theprotective equipment temporarily.
The MSS supports the three most commonly used muting types:
Control of safety-related AS-i outputs
The MSS 3RK3 Advanced can control up to 12 different safety-related AS i outputs. For this purpose, switching commands are generated based on the safety logic within the MSS. These switching commands are each assigned an AS-i address and can be placed on the AS-i bus as broadcast signals. A broadcast signal is assigned to a safe AS-i output directly at the slave itself.
With MSS Advanced it is possible to exchange signals between multiple MSSs via AS-Interface. The signals are assigned to the MSS stations by the MSS ES parameterization software on the respective MSS. In addition, higher-level safety-related shutdown commands, e.g., an emergency stop command from a system to switch off all safety cells, can be easily incorporated via AS-i.
One program, a lot of convenience: MSS ES parameterization software
The MSS ES parameterization software is an essential component of our Modular Safety System. It replaces the tedious wiring of individual functions by using quick and easy parameter assignment.

Simple, fast and efficient
All function elements can be positioned using drag & drop. All the functions - whether they are safety functions or logic functions – are available as blocks and, in addition, can easily be combined with each other.
A true highlight:
MSS ES enables the safety application to be tested by forcing. Outputs can be individually set in this process, to monitor the response of the downstream safety function in advance. This facilitates and accelerates the commissioning of the safety application. In addition, the parameter assignment can be downloaded to the MSS via PROFIBUS. The macro function is another convenient feature. It enables you to compile a library of your own function elements for reuse in other projects.
In addition, our parameterization software is well-suited as a reliable "diagnostics tool”: The status of each element as well as the entire configuration can be viewed online.
In addition, an extensive documentation of the safety functions is created.
Advantages at a glance:
Fast parameter assignment: MSS ES contains all the elements and tools that are required for configuring, diagnostics, and commissioning of your application.
Easy linking: For all functions, MSS ES provides blocks that can be easily logically combined with a click of the mouse.
User-friendly operation: MSS ES provides a user-friendly and clearly structured user interface with which the safety application can be parameterized, operated, monitored and tested.
