With extensive input from our customers, we have developed innovative new offerings to our MCC line that not only offer unique benefits but also target some of today’s toughest challenges in the oil & gas, construction, water / wastewater and process industries. Our most recent addition to the product offering is an ARC Resistant MCC. Below please find a summary of a recent white paper written on the new technology.

Summary

This paper describes the dangers of arc flashes in operating industrial electrical equipment. While important safety standards have evolved over time to help mitigate the injuries and damage caused by arc faults, tens of thousands of accidents still occur each year involving the wide range of electrical gear present in a typical industrial environment. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) can help avoid or reduce the severity of injuries, and its widespread use should be seen as a top priority for industrial users. Electrical equipment manufacturers, including Siemens, have incorporated advanced technology and strengthened structural design to improve the safety potential of equipment such as Switchgear and Motor Control Centers (MCC). Standards for performance-testing their arc-resistant features have so far only been defined for switchgear, but manufacturers are using those standards for testing arc-resistant MCCs. Siemens is the first manufacturer in the industry to have taken the vital step to have Underwriter Laboratories (UL) observe and validate the testing of its arc-resistant tiastarTM MCC model. Siemens wants customers to know not only that the tiastar arc-resistant MCC successfully met the testing criteria required by the standards, but also that a qualified, independent third-party has confirmed this satisfactory performance.

Siemens Motor Control Centers (MCC) task is to control and protect motors used in industrial processes, as well as enclosed motor starters, switchboards and control cabinets.

The key competences of the West Chicago facility are customer-specific MCC layout design, a high level of flexibility for engineer-to-order projects and special function testing. The facility was opened in 1969 and has since worked to support the Industry Automation Division of Siemens Industry, Inc. in the USA.

Exceeding customer expectations is a cornerstone for Siemens Industry, Inc, so the development of an online tool allows its customers and partners to obtain important product information 24/7 was imperative for the company’s Control Components and Systems Engineering business unit.

Siemens CAx online portal now services hundreds of customers, allowing each to obtain comprehensive data for direct import into engineering programs, including manuals, data sheets, operating instructions, UL/CSA/CE/CCC files and graphical data such as 2D drawings, 3D models and circuit diagrams.

SIMOCODE pro now has a baby brother

New 3RB24 Electronic Overload Relay offers simpler communicating solution

The new 3RB24 electronic overload relay is the perfect solution for controlling, monitoring and protecting motors up to 630A.  It consists of a two piece design similar to SIMOCODE pro by having a base electronics module, a separate current measuring module (available in 5 current ranges) and an optional operator panel. The 3RB24 can directly control a contactor for direct reversing and Y-Delta motor applications. Over IO-Link, the 3RB24 can communicate key operation and diagnostic data such as running status, motor current (Amps and %FLA), overload and ground fault. Four 3RB24 overload relays can be controlled and monitored by one IO-Link Master module in an ET200S system.

SIMOCODE pro V will soon have integrated Safety

In June 2011, the SIMOCODE pro V Motor Management System will offer two new safety rated I/O expansion modules available. The DM-F Local module provides the function of a safety relay where local safety inputs such as an E-Stop switch can be wired directly into it. Dual output contacts can safely switch off the motor load and comply with a SIL3/CAT 4 safety level. The DM-F PROFISAFE module provides the capability to safely communicate with an S7 Failsafe PLC. Safe inputs can be wired directly to the inputs and dual contactors can be directly wired to the outputs. This provides a very cost effective way  to safely shut down 100’s of motors in virtually any zone control configuration.
